Overnight Dispatches

From Rotoworld:

Mike Lieberthal (hip) didn’t play on Thursday but he could return to the lineup on Friday. Lieberthal could have played if he had to on Thursday, but the Phillies decided to give the fragile catcher an extra day of rest.

Moises Alou hit a two-run homer and was at home plate when the winning run scored on a wild pitch in the Giants’ 5-4 victory over the Pirates on Thursday night. The Pirates gave the game away in the ninth. Eliezer Alfonzo reached on a flare to shallow left that Jack Wilson should have caught. After a sac bunt, an error on a fly to right put runners at first and third. An intentional walk loaded the bases for Lance Niekro, but Niekro couldn’t capitalize, hitting a fly to shallow right. The wild pitch while Alou was up ended the game, giving Armando Benitez his fourth relief victory. The Pirates are just 5-25 in road games this season.

Jose Reyes, who missed two games with a sore right wrist, is starting at shortstop on Thursday night. Chris Woodward returns to the bench.

No additional problems were found in Kerry Wood‘s shoulder during an examination by Dr. Tim Kremchek in Cincinnati on Wednesday. “We were pleased with the results of the exam,” Cubs trainer Mark O’Neal said. “Basically, we’re dealing with post-throwing soreness. He has a little joint irritation, and there’s no injury there. I think it was good to have him come in and see Dr. Kremchek. It’s the first time [Kremchek] has seen him since we started doing things this spring, so I think it was a good experience for Kerry.” Wood remains questionable to make his scheduled start on Sunday. The Cubs will make a decision on Friday.

Doug Davis gave up three runs and 10 hits in seven innings Thursday in a no-decision versus the Padres. Davis didn’t give up a walk for the first time in 14 starts this season, with just three strikeouts and 10 hits allowed, it still wasn’t that encouraging of a performance. He’s 3-4 with a 5.11 ERA.
