Overnight Dispatches

From Rotoworld:

The Phillies placed Mike Lieberthal on the 15-day disabled list on Saturday retroactive to June 6 with a strained left hip, according to the AP. It is the second time he has gone on the DL this season because of his hip.

Barring a setback, Jeff Kent is expected to be activated from the disabled list on Tuesday, according to the LA Times. He is recovering from a sprained wrist and told manager Grady Little Wednesday that he’d already healed enough to play.

Juan Cruz, who is on the 15-day disabled list with a sore right shoulder, threw off a mound on Saturday, according to the AP. “I wanted him to throw nice and easy,” manager Bob Melvin said. “He doesn’t know how to throw nice and easy.” There’s no timetable for Cruz to return to the rotation. He will likely make a couple of rehab starts.

Shortly after being placed on the disabled list Friday, Kerry Wood (shoulder) said he’s “not injured.” “I didn’t hurt anything,” Wood said. “It’s just something that comes along with having shoulder surgery. I’ve had a little bit of a tough time recovering and getting this thing ready to go every fifth, sixth or seventh day sometimes. We’ll take the time to get it right and get back before the All-Star break and finish the season healthy.” Sure we will.  It was only a matter of time. Perhaps two weeks off will do Wood some good. If that’s all he needs, he might not make a rehab start before rejoining the rotation. Carlos Marmol is likely to take Wood’s start on Sunday. Angel Guzman is replacing him on the roster.

Mark Mulder was pounded for six runs in three innings by the Brewers on Friday. Over his last three starts, Mulder has given up 22 runs and 27 hits in 14 innings. He has to be battling some sort of injury. We weren’t expecting him to have a big season, but he can’t be this bad.

Geoff Jenkins has been dropped to the seventh spot in the order against left-hander Mark Mulder on Friday. We assume that Jenkins will keep hitting third versus righties, but this is for the best. Jenkins is hitting .143 in 56 at-bats against left-handers this season.

With Ken Griffey Jr. back, Adam Dunn has been dropped to the sixth spot in the Cincinnati lineup on Friday night. Dunn is in a slump, but he still has the highest OPS on the Reds, unless Dave Ross counts. At least he has Austin Kearns to keep him company in the bottom half of the lineup. Kearns, who has the third highest OPS behind Dunn and Ken Griffey Jr., is batting seventh.
