UTK Update

From Baseball Prospectus:

[Mark Prior] is something different now, just as Kerry Wood is no longer the Kerry Wood who scared hitters and threatened a 20-strikeout performance every time out. Prior and Wood–who should be back in the rotation by next weekend–can still be effective, even great, but not how we thought. It’s up to them to find a new way to win ballgames.

I really should keep count of the Player Vs. Wall war, which would be easy, because one side wins all the battles. Wall’s latest victim was Dave Roberts, who looked like the human version of the front crumple zones you see in car ads. The padding in Angels Stadium’s left-field corner didn’t go down far enough to keep Roberts from coming away with a deep bruise on his right knee. This is the second time this season that Roberts has crashed into a wall, meaning the team either has to change the way he plays or figure out how to get more padding on the fences. (I’m curious. Why doesn’t padding go all the way down?)

Overnight Dispatches

From Rotoworld, Rotowire:

Plans for Mike Lieberthal returning to action on Friday are very tentative at this time. He mimicked running the bases yesterday for the first time since straining his hip. Although he felt little lingering pain while running straight, he did feel the injury when he turned left at half speed.

Dave Roberts is expected to miss 2-6 weeks because of a deep knee bruise suffered Saturday. The Padres will put Roberts on the DL and probably recall outfielder Ben Johnson from Triple-A Portland before facing the Rangers on Tuesday. Manager Bruce Bochy said an MRI exam yesterday apparently revealed no major damage to ligaments, tendons or cartilage. “He’ll be out up to possibly 4-6 weeks. It’s hard to say right now. We don’t think it’ll be that long.”

Chuck James is expected to rejoin the Braves starting rotation sometime this week. James threw seven innings and allowed eight hits and three runs in a Sunday’s start for Triple-A Richmond against Pawtucket. He notched the no-decision, but is 1-0 with a 2.67 ERA in seven games (six starts) in the minors. There’s a chance he’ll start Saturday vs. TB.

Chipper Jones was used as a pinch-hitter on Sunday and grounded into a fielder’s choice. Jones didn’t start because of his bruised right thumb. He’ll probably be back at third base after Monday’s off day.

Moises Alou was scratched from Sunday’s starting lineup due to back spasms. “I can’t bend over,” he said. It sounds like Alou could miss a few days, resulting in extra at-bats for Steve Finley.

Pirates activated pitcher Kip Wells from the 60-day disabled list. Wells is going to rejoin the Pittsburgh rotation Tuesday after just two rehab starts. He’s probably not going to have a lot of success initially, but he should possess some value in NL-only leagues over the final three months. If possible, keep him reserved for at least his first week back.
