Overnight Dispatches

From Rotoworld, Rotowire:

The Padres will reevaluate Dave Roberts (knee) in five or six days. “It’s hard to read where exactly he is,” said manager Bruce Bochy. “We’ll know better in five or six days where he’s at.” He is eligible to come off the disabled list on July 4.

Since Kerry Wood began to fatigue after just 67 pitches in yesterday’s simulated game, he will not come off the disabled list this weekend. In fact, the Cubs have no idea when Wood will be ready to return from his ailing shoulder. At this point, they’ll wait a few days to decide when his next bullbpen session will come. Trainer Mark O’Neal reported that Wood’s first 60 pitches went well, but he began to fatigue and stopped after 10 more. “I would not rule it out, but I would put doubt on it,” O’Neal said. The Cubs could have Wood throw another simulated game or make a rehab start on Sunday.

Although Rich Aurilia entered last night’s game as a pinch-hitter, he wasn’t ready to start due to his sore right biceps. “In an emergency, he could play,” said manager Jerry Narron. “I don’t think he’s anywhere close to being DL’ed, but we’re just trying to give him as much time as we can. He might play Wednesday, though since the Reds are facing another right-hander, it’d make sense to leave him on the bench.

The back spasms that sidelined Moises Alou for the previous two games are still bothering him and kept him out of the starting lineup on Tuesday. He was scheduled to have an MRI exam earlier in the day. “I have done treatment and it’s not getting better,” he said. Steve Finley will continue to fill in if alou requires another DL stint.

In his first start since being activated from the disabled list on Sunday, Kip Wells was knocked around by the Royals for six runs on five hits and five walks in 3 1-3 innings Tuesday. Wells had been sidelined since undergoing surgery in March for a blocked artery in his pitching arm. There was little reason to expect Wells to be ready after just two rehab starts. The Pirates should have called up Tom Gorzelanny to join the rotation in place of the injured Victor Santos. Wells may have some value in NL-only leagues eventually, but he’s still rehabbing right now.

Mike Lieberthal is expected to return to the Phillies either for this weekend’s series against the Red Sox, or next week’s series against the Orioles, according to the Philadelphia website. Lieberthal is sidelined with a strained left hip.

Mark Mulder was hammered by the White Sox on Tuesday, yielding nine runs and 10 hits in 2 1-3 innings, according to the AP. Mulder has given up 35 runs on 51 hits and 12 walks in his last six starts. He has to be hurting. Mulder managed to start with two scoreless innings tonight, but the White Sox got to him and Brad Thompson for 11 runs in the third. Since his last quality start on May 22, Mulder has a 13.50 ERA in five outings. Maybe the Cardinals will put him on the DL, resulting in the return of Sidney Ponson to the rotation.
