Overnight Dispatches

From Rotoworld, Rotowire:

The Contra Costa Times reports that the Giants probably will activate Moises Alou from the disabled list on Monday. He was in the original starting lineup Wednesday until he experienced more tightness in his strained lower back after batting practice, at which point he was placed on the DL, retroactive to June 18.

Recovering from a strained left hip, Mike Lieberthal still isn’t 100 percent, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer. It’s beginning to look like the catcher might not be activated from the disabled list until after the All-Star break. “We’re not optimistic he’s going to be back before that,” Phillies assistant general manager Ruben Amaro said.

Padres manager Bruce Bochy said that Dave Roberts “moved around pretty well” in batting practice on Wednesday, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune. On the disabled list with a bruised right knee, he could return to action later next week or after the All-Star break.

Armando Benitez said his sore right elbow felt better after throwing a bullpen session on Wednesday, according to the Contra Costa Times. He probably won’t pitch in a game until at least this weekend, though. “I want to be completely healed to try to do my job,” Benitez said. He’s slated to toss another side session on Friday.

Matt Wise hasn’t been available the past three days because he cut the middle finger of his pitching hand on a pair of salad tongs Sunday, according to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. “That’s right where (the ball) comes off (the finger),” Wise said. He tried to warm up last night but couldn’t get a proper grip on the ball. “I’ll be available (today) no matter what,” Wise said. “I don’t care how it feels. I’ll be ready to go.

Clay Hensley combined with two relievers on a six-hitter as the Padres beat the A’s 8-1 on Wednesday. Hensley gave up five of the hits and the run while working seven innings. Brian Sweeney and Scott Cassidy finished up. The victory was Hensley’s first in five starts this month. At 5-6 with a 4.14 ERA, he remains a decent play in NL-only leagues.

Adrian Gonzalez singled four times in four at-bats and scored a pair of runs in the Padres’ win on Wednesday. Still no RBI. Gonzalez is batting .326 with five homers this month, but that’s only netted him seven runs batted in.

Juan Cruz (shoulder) allowed one run and four hits over 3 1/3 innings in a rehab start for Triple-A Tucson on Wednesday. He struck out four. Cruz could come off the DL to start for the Diamondbacks on Monday.

Doug Davis was scratched from his scheduled start Thursday with a sore lower back. Davis has a history of minor back troubles. He only expects to miss one turn because of the problem. Jeremi Gonzalez will take his place tomorrow against the Cubs.

Carlos Marmol surrendered just one run and three hits in 6 1/3 innings Wednesday against the Brewers. David Bush matched him, so Marmol wasn’t involved in the decision. However, he did show enough to keep his rotation spot through the All-Star break. Marmol isn’t recommended in NL-only leagues.
