Say Goodbye to: Luis Castillo, Matt Diaz (again)

2B – Luis Castillo
Acquired: July 27th, 2010 ($2 FAAB)
Released: August 17th, 2010
Originally drafted by Cover Zero for $3 in the 2010 auction, Castillo had been plagued by injuries all season, but was activated from the DL when picked up last month. Unfortnately, he still stinks, and it’s not just the injuries. Oh, and by the way, in the three weeks since Castillo was picked up and Omar Infante dropped, Infante has batted .378 with 12 runs, and 2 steals – and was promptly picked up by Goodfellas. Ugh. That may have been a mistake.

OF – Matt Diaz
Acquired: Re-acquired July 27th, 2010 ($1 FAAB)
Released: August 17th, 2010
Diaz, the first RoadRunner to be re-acquired three weeks ago, becomes the first RoadRunner to be released twice in the 2010 season. At the time, it seemed like a good idea, but there were better performers on the AaRr bench, and we needed different stats, specifically steals (thus Bernadina and Cain were activated in his place).

Meet the New Guys: Gallardo, Hudson, Pujols, Soto

Trade Deadline Edition – Acquired from The Pi Train

Brewers SP Yovani Gallardo was deemed un-protectable due to his $27 salary, but the RoadRunners can use some good starting pitching, especially in ERA and WHIP. He’s currently on pace to surpass 200 strikeouts for the second straight season. Control issues have plagued him in the past, but with just one walk Monday, Gallardo has walked two batters or less in each of his last seven starts. He has arrived as a legit fantasy ace. (Rotoworld)

New Diamondbacks SP Daniel Hudson was acquired last month from the White Sox in the Edwin Jackson trade last month, and as such, is not protectable. Hudson threw seven innings of two-run ball in the Diamondbacks’ 8-2 victory over the Brewers on Wednesday. Hudson racked up nine strikeouts against one walk, improving to 3-0 as a member of the Diamondbacks. He was an intriguing prospect as part of the White Sox organization, and now he’s a full-fledged must-own in fantasy leagues. Grab him in time for next week’s outing against the Reds. (Rotoworld)

Three-time NL MVP Albert Pujols joins the RoadRunners for the second time in his career (he was also acquired in trade as a 3B in 2002). His WBRL contract (1/$37) expires after this sesaon. Yesterday, Pujols became the first player in major league history Sunday to begin a career with 10 straight 30-plus homer seasons. We’ve expended all of the world’s greatest adjectives in describing Pujols over these past 10 seasons and he’s deserving off all the praise. The three-time MVP is a living baseball legend and is putting together yet another stellar fantasy campaign. He’s likely to land one of the most lucrative contracts in sports history after the 2011 season — or perhaps before it. (Rotoworld)

Cubs C Geovany Soto will shore up the second catcher position behind Buster Posey, after previous protections (Chris Iannetta) and minor league picks (Ronny Paulino) didn’t pan out. Currently on the DL for a bum shoulder, he is expected back Sunday. Soto has been a real bounce-back story this year, and a revelation in fantasy – especially in leagues that count OBP. (Rotoworld)

Say Goodbye To: Belt, Bumgarner, and Storen

Trade Deadline Edition – Traded to The Pi Train

1B – Brandon Belt
Acquired: July 20th, 2010 ($3 FAAB)
Traded: August 17th, 2010 (Traded to The Pi Train)
Belt, a 2009 5th-round selection from the University of Texas, exploded in 2010, jumping from High-A, dominating at AA, and then holding his own at AAA Fresno. He’s now likely considered the future 1B for the San Francisco Giants, although he has enough athleticism to play left field, depending on how the Giants manage their free agents. Will participate in the Arizona Fall League in 2010, and likely will be called up sometime in 2011.

Minor League – 2010 AB AVG R HR RBI SB

Richmond (AA) 175 .337 26 9 40 2
Fresno (AAA) 48 .229 11 4 10 2

SP – Madison Bumgarner
Acquired: Protected from 2009 ($2 at 2009 auction)
Traded: August 17th, 2010 (Traded to The Pi Train)
Called up in late June and plugged directly into the rotation, Bumgarner has done well, having won four games in ten starts thus far in his career. Earlier in 2010 at AAA Fresno, Bumgarner overcame velocity issues that plagued him towards the end of last season (2009), and he featured a 3.16 ERA in 14 starts in April, May, and early June. Only 1 year remaining on his WBRL contract.

RP – Drew Storen
Acquired: 2010 Auction ($8)
Traded: August 17th, 2010 (Traded to The Pi Train)
Storen, the other Nationals first-round draft pick in 2009, was a closer at Stanford, and was designated “Closer of the Future” as soon as he signed. While he was scheduled to open the 2010 season in the minors, he was promoted in mid-May to get experience in the 7th inning and lower-leverage situations. With the trade of Matt Capps to Minnesota at the deadline, Storen ascended to sharing the closer role with Tyler Clippard and Sean Burnett, and will likely be the closer later in 2010 and beyond.

Meet the New Guy: Brooks Conrad

Braves utility infielder Brooks Conrad re-joins the RoadRunners to shore up the MI spot, as he was a RoadRunner for two weeks in 2009 (Weeks 15-16, July 16th-28th, 2009). With both Chipper Jones and Martin Prado on the DL, Conrad has been playing at second base this week. Brooks Conrad provided the only offense Friday night with a solo home run in the Braves’ 1-0 win over the Dodgers. For one night, the Braves can forget about Chipper Jones’ torn ACL. However, don’t go running to the wire to add Conrad. Although he’ll get the majority of the starts at third base, he’s more of a defensive utility man than bat. (Rotoworld)

Roster Moves – Week 20 – August 17th, 2010

Trade:

  • Atomic Roadrunners receives:
    • 1B Albert Pujols, Cardinals (active at UT)
    • C Geovani Soto, Cubs (active at C)
    • SP Yovani Gallardo, Brewers (active)
    • SP Daniel Hudson, Diamondbacks (active)
  • The Pi Train receives:
    • RP Drew Storen, Nationals
    • SP Madison Bumgarner, Giants
    • 1B Brandon Belt, Giants (minors)

FAAB Acquisitions:

  • 2B Brooks Conrad, Braves ($2 bid), Add to actives

Up:

  • RP Hong-Chih Kuo

Down:

  • C Ronny Paulino
  • OF Lorenzo Cain
  • SP Randy Wells

Cut:

  • 2B Luis Castillo
  • OF Matt Diaz

Notes:

  • Cubs C Geovany Soto is currently on the 15-Day disabled list (retroactive to August 7th) with an injured throwing shoulder.  There are chances that he will not return this season, but the latest news is that he’s scheduled to take batting practice later today, and may return on Sunday, August 22nd.
  • The Pi Train had coveted Storen all summer, and Bumgarner only has one season remaining on his contract.
  • Goodfellas picked up former Roadrunner Danny Espinosa of the Nationals.  There’s a chance he might get a September audition, but he can no longer be protected in the minor leagues (this season).
  • Of the new acquisitions, only Gallardo is protectable (2/$27). Both Soto ($10) and Pujols ($37) have expiring contracts, and Hudson was traded in-season from the White Sox (AL) in the Edwin Jackson deal.
  • In a stunning move, Pirate Smokers made transactions today.  Having only previously made a move on April 27th (Jason Heyward up, Carlos Beltran down), Mark made two pickups (Octavio Dotel and Sergio Casilla), activated Beltran finally (he came off the DL in July) and finally sent down Brandon Webb (60-Day DL, likely to miss all of 2010).
