Notes:

  • Russell Martin is not in the lineup for Thursday’s game against the Phillies. Martin has started the last nine games for the Pirates, but he will get a day off after seeing his eight-game hitting streak come to an end Wednesday. Michael McKenry will get the start behind the plate in Martin’s place. (Rotoworld)
  • Ted Lilly allowed one run over five innings Wednesday, but the Dodgers lost to the Mets in extra innings. Lilly was making his first start of the season following September shoulder surgery, and the start had to be a relief to the newly pitching-deficient Dodgers. Lilly did allow six hits but kept the Mets at bay by registering seven strikeouts. His next start will come Monday against the Rockies at Dodger Stadium. (Rotoworld)
  • When asked Wednesday what it would take for John Axford to get his closer job back, Brewers manager Ron Roenicke replied, “probably not much.” Axford has allowed two hits, walked none and struck out six in 5 1/3 scoreless innings over his last six appearances. Interim closer Jim Henderson has also pitched well, and Roenicke isn’t ready to make a move just yet, but he could soon if Axford’s turnaround continues. “I think right now, we’re not going to flip ‘Ax’ back in the closer’s role,” said Roenicke. “I think Henderson is doing a nice job. But ‘Ax,’ the way he threw (Tuesday), he could win every ball game he went in if he throws that way. I was really impressed with him.” (Rotoworld)
  • Todd Frazier homered off Jeff Samardzija for the only run of Wednesday’s game against the Cubs. Frazier’s strikeout rate is up this year, but he’s managed six homers and 18 RBI in 21 games anyway. Time will tell if he’ll be able to maintain a .260+ average, but the power numbers are pretty legit. (Rotoworld)
  • Edward Mujica picked up his third save in three days Wednesday against the Nationals. Mujica retired all eight batters he faced in recording those saves. Of course, it helped that the eight batters he faced were Anthony Rendon x2, Danny Espinosa x2, Kurt Suzuki, Ian Desmond, Chad Tracy and Jonathan Solano. Mujica is now 4-for-4 in save opportunities this season. (Rotoworld)
