Roster Moves – Week 2 – April 10th, 2012

FAAB Acquisitions:

  • SP Jake Westbrook, Cardinals ($0 bid, add to actives)

Up:

  • C Devin Mesoraco
  • 2B Daniel Descalso (to UT)

Moves:

  • OF Juan Pierre (from UT)

Down:

  • OF Nate Schierholtz
  • C Jordan Pacheco
  • SP Tim Stauffer

Cut:

  • SP Chris Volstad

Notes:

  • SP Tim Stauffer was placed on the 15-Day Disabled List on Thursday, April 5th with a right   triceps injury.  This was announced after the Week 1 transaction deadline.
  • The Pi Train was the other bidder for Jake Westbrook ($4 bid), as he was 4th contingency for Anthony Bass, 3rd contingency for Lucas Harrell, 4th contingency for Kirk Nieuwenhuis,  3rd contingency for Justin Maxwell, all of which ended up being moot.

Roster Moves – Week 18 – August 3rd, 2010

Up:

  • C Ronny Paulino
  • MI Cristian Guzman
  • OF Roger Bernadina (to UT)
  • RP Drew Storen

Down:

  • C Chris Iannetta
  • MI Luis Castillo
  • OF Matt Diaz
  • SP Edinson Volquez

Notes:

  • SS Cristian Guzman was traded to the Texas Rangers on July 29th in a deadline deal.  He’ll start at 2B while Ian Kinsler is on the DL (expected until the end of August).
  • RP Drew Storen has seen his path to saves become a bit clearer.  Nationals closer Matt Capps was dealt to the Twins in a July 27th trade.  For now, Storen, fellow RoadRunner Tyler Clippard, and Sean Burnett will rotate for saves, though Burnett got the save last night. Update: It was a 1-2/3 inning save after Burnett entered to face a lefty.  Storen had pitched 2 innings Sunday.
  • RP Joel Hanrahan is also in a position for more saves, with the trade of Pirates closer Octavio Dotel to the Dodgers on July 31st.  He and Evan Meek will vie for ninth-inning duties.
  • The Braves acquired Royals OF Rick Ankiel, who will be added to the LF/CF mix, so Matt Diaz will likely see a decrease in ABs.
  • The Shoeless Jews picked up former 2010 RoadRunner Chris Volstad, who was called up from AAA two weeks ago.  Volstad isn’t really protectable at $10.
  • Misogynistic Padres picked up former 2010 RoadRunner Juan Gutierrez.  Gutierrez is blowing the majority of the save opportunities for new Diamondback’s manager Kirk Gibson.  Seriously, he’s 0-6 with 3 saves and an ERA of 6.69, which is down from earlier this year.
  • Goodfellas took advantage of a RoadRunner mistake, picking up MI Omar Infante of the Braves for a $1 FAAB bid (I had bid $0).  Infante was released last week in the Luis Castillo gambit, but will now be the starting 2B with Martin Prado on the DL.  Goodfellas has Prado, so perhaps it was just a case of picking up the backup.
  • In the first FAAB bidding since the MLB trade deadline, bids were fast and furious.  The only player I bid on was new Dodgers OF Scott Podsednik, who came over from the Royals.  Here was the bidding:  $93 (X-Men), $75 (Misogynistic Padres), $47 (Goodfellas), $29 (Get Off Kong), $16 (AaRr), $5 (Pi Train)

Say Goodbye To: John Ely, Chris Volstad

SP – John Ely
Acquired: May 18th, 2010 ($5 FAAB)
Released: July 20th, 2010
John Ely was a surprise callup from the minors when Dodgers starter Vicente Padilla went on the DL. Ely didn’t have spectacular stuff, but was a smart pitcher who battled his way out of jams. Unfortunately, during his second trip through the NL things started to get rocky, and his low strikeout rate didn’t offer any peripheral gains. Moved to the bullpen just before the All-Star break, Ely was demoted to AAA Albuquerque last week.

SP – Chris Volstad
Acquired: Second-Round selection, 2010 Minor League Draft
Released: July 20th, 2010
Chris Volstad has become a solid innings-eater for the Florida Marlins. The problem is that with his $10 salary, he’s not really protectable, and of late, his statistics are actually hurting the team, especially in ERA and WHIP, while he does’t strike out enough players. With Edinson Volquez activated and Drew Storen and Madison Bumgarner promoted, there’s not enough roster space for a fungible starter.

Roster Moves – Week 16 – July 20th, 2010

FAAB Acquisitions:

  • 1B Brandon Belt, AA Giants – ($3 bid) Reserve
  • OF Trayvon Robinson, AA Dodgers – ($2 bid) Reserve

Up:

  • SS Cristian Guzman
  • OF Roger Bernadina (to UT)
  • SP Edinson Volquez

Down:

  • SS Jonathan Herrera
  • 3B Casey Blake (from UT)
  • SP Ian Kennedy

Cut:

  • SP Chris Volstad
  • SP John Ely

Notes:

  • Volquez made his debut on Saturday night in his return from Tommy John surgery, going 6 innings, with 1 earned run, 3 hits, 2 walks, and 9 strikeouts over 96 pitches against the Rockies.  I’d say he’s back, but he may have some wildness.
  • I bid $16 for new Atlanta SS Alex Gonzalez.  The bidding was as follows: $100 Cover Zero, $79 Misogynistic Padres, $53 X-Men, $16 AaRr.  I should have known beforehand, as Steve was making Gonzalez available prior to the FAAB run ($100 max bid + last place= no tie-breakers)
  • Belt and Robinson were signed as today was the deadline for acquiring players protectable in the minor leagues.
  • Backup bids for Belt and Robinson were former Roadrunner SP Christian Friedrich and Reds SS Zach Cozart

Roster Moves – Week 14 – July 6th, 2010

FAAB Acquisitions:

  • RP Joel Hanrahan, Pirates ($0 FAAB) – Add to Actives

Up:

  • 3B Chase Headley
  • RP Drew Storen
  • SP Randy Wells

Down:

  • 3B Casey Blake
  • RP Sam Demel
  • SP Chris Volstad
  • SP John Ely

Cut:

  • SS Danny Espinosa

Notes:

  • No other bidders on Hanrahan, who joins the Roadrunners for the first time in his career, though he was tracked from Los Angeles to Washington and now to Pittsburgh. He’s a hedge for saves, with the expectation that Pirates closer Octavio Dotel will be dealt in the coming weeks.
  • Update (7/7): The Marlins demoted Chris Volstad to AAA New Orleans after Tuesday night’s rough start.
  • All-Star Teams were announced this weekend, and the Roadrunners have six on the roster.
    • SP Josh Johnson
    • 2B Brandon Phillips
    • SS Troy Tulowitzki (injured, will not participate)
    • UT Omar Infante (really? This selection universally panned)
    • OF Marlon Byrd
    • OF Matt Holliday

Roster Moves – Week 13 – June 29th, 2010

FAAB Acquisitions:

  • RP Sam Demel, Diamondbacks ($2 bid), Add to actives
  • RP Hong-Chih Kuo, Dodgers ($1 bid), Add to actives

Up:

  • SS Jonathan Herrera
  • SP Chris Volstad
  • SP John Ely

Down:

  • SS Omar Infante
  • RP Drew Storen
  • RP Tyler Clippard
  • SP Randy Wells
  • SP Ian Kennedy

Cut:

  • SP Christian Friedrich (AA – Minors)
  • SP Jordan Lyles (AA – Minors)

Notes:

  • SP Madison Bumgarner was called up from AAA Fresno Saturday, June 26th, for his 2010 debut against the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park.
  • Hong-Chih Kuo rejoins the Roadrunners for the first time since 2007, when he helped the pitching staff as a starter in the second half.
  • Kuo was originally drafted this season by Get Off Kong! (11th Round, 2010 Minor League Draft), but he was released on May 4th.
  • Kuo was a second contingency FAAB selection by Cover Zero.
  • The Pi Train bid $1 on Sam Demel, but was outbid by yours truly.
  • Cover Zero selected former 2o1o Roadrunner Jose Contreras for $0 FAAB bid.
  • Demel’s contract is for 1 year, as he came over from the Oakland A’s AAA Sacramento affiliate to the Diamondbacks in the Conor Jackson trade two weeks ago.

Roster Moves – Week 12 – June 22nd, 2010

FAAB Acquisitions:

  • 2B Jonathan Herrera, Rockies ($6 FAAB), Reserve
  • SS Danny Espinosa, Nationals ($0 FAAB), Reserve

Up:

  • 3B Casey Blake
  • SS Omar Infante
  • SP Randy Wells

Down:

  • 3B Chase Headley
  • SS Troy Tulowitzki
  • SP Chris Volstad

Cut:

  • C Jason Jaramillo
  • RP Jose Contreras

Notes:

  • On Friday, June 18th, the Rockies placed SS Troy Tulowitzki on the 15-Day Disabled List with a broken hammate bone in his left wrist, courtesy of a plunking by Twins pitcher Alex Burnett.  Surgery won’t be necessary, but Tulo will be out 6-8 weeks, and will likely take another six weeks to regain his power stroke.
  • The Roadrunners bid $5 on young Padres OF Aaron Cunningham, but were out-bid by Get Off Kong!, who got him for $7.

Overnight Dispatches – June 9th, 2010

According to Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the Pirates will call up prospect right-hander Brad Lincoln and outfielder Jose Tabata before Wednesday’s game against the Nationals. Lincoln was widely expected to make his major league debut on Wednesday, but the promotion of Tabata comes as a minor surprise. The 21-year-old outfielder is batting .308/.373/.424 with three home runs, 19 RBI and 25 stolen bases in 224 at-bats with Triple-A Indianapolis this season. The Pirates will likely give plenty of playing time to Tabata, making the supposed 21 year-old a worthy fantasy pickup right off the bat. We’re still eagerly awaiting Pedro Alvarez’s debut, but the two are a nice infusion of youth for a team that was dominated by Stephen Strasburg on Tuesday night. (Rotoworld)

Casey Blake was 0-for-4 with two strikeouts in his return to the starting lineup against the Cardinals on Tuesday night. Blake missed the last five games due to back spasms. (Rotoworld)

Chris Volstad allowed six runs — five earned — over four innings in a loss to the Phillies on Tuesday. The Phillies offense was on and Volstad just wasn’t up to the task, allowing eight hits, including two homers. He didn’t help his own cause by walking three and striking out just two. Volstad does struggle with consistency, but has big upside. There was a chance that the line might have been much uglier for Volstad, as he left three men on base when he exited, and only one of those runners scored. He allowed two home runs in the contest for his first mulit-home run performance since April 25 when he pitched at Coors Field. He has gone more than a month without a win (May 7). In other words, he’s a matchup starter in mixed leagues. Against Tampa Bay this weekend, you’re going to have to have a strong stomach to use him. (Rotoworld)

Omar Infante went 3-for-5 with a steal in the Braves’ win over the Diamondbacks Tuesday. He got to start at second with Martin Prado nursing a finger injury, but the regular is expected to return Wednesday. Infante might be hard-up for playing time now that Chipper Jones has returned to third base. (Rotowire)

Brandon Phillips went 3-for-4 with a double in the Reds’ loss to the Giants Tuesday. He picked up three hits against a gem-ing Matt Cain, but he was caught stealing for the sixth time this year. (Rotowire)

The Padres moved Chase Headley to the No. 2 spot in the lineup Tuesday, the team’s official site reports. Manager Bud Black wanted to move David Eckstein into the leadoff spot, which prompted him to move Headley into the now-vacant two-hole. Headley will now bat ahead of Adrian Gonzalez instead of behind him. (Rotowire)

Aroldis Chapman had his worst outing as a pro on Monday, giving up seven runs on six hits and six walks with one strikeout in just two-plus innings, the Reds’ official site reports. Chapman’s walk-rate was already a concern before this outing, and it should help slow down the cries to call him up. He’s got a 61:34 K:BB in 54.2 innings. (Rotowire)

Roster Moves – Week 10 – June 8th, 2010

Up:

  • SP Wade LeBlanc
  • SP Chris Volstad

Down:

  • RP Jose Contreras
  • SP Randy Wells

Note:

  • Former Roadrunner LaTroy Hawkins was moved from the 15-Day to the 60-Day DL, so A. releasing him was a good move, and B. John Axford is a little safer, once Hoffman’s attempts are completed.

Roster Moves – Week 9 – June 1st, 2010

FAAB Acquisition:

  • RP John Axford, Brewers ($12 bid) – Add to Actives

Up:

  • RP Tyler Clippard
  • C Buster Posey

Down:

  • C Chris Iannetta
  • SP Wade LeBlanc
  • SP Chris Volstad

Cut:

  • OF Luis Durango

Notes:

  • Misogynistic Padres ($7 FAAB bid) was the only other team to bid on Axford.
