Roster Moves – Week 20 – August 9, 2011

Trade:

Acquired from Cover Zero:

  • OF Ryan Braun (2/$42), Brewers
  • RP Chad Qualls (2/$7), Padres

Traded to Cover Zero:

  • RP Joel Hanrahan (1/$5), Pirates
  • SP Shelby Miller (3/$8), Cardinals (minors)

FAAB Acquisitions:

  • RP David Hernandez, Diamondbacks ($2 bid), Add to actives
  • RP Wilton Lopez, Astros ($0 bid), Add to actives
  • RP Jose Veras, Pirates ($0 bid), Add to actives

Down:

  • SP Charlie Morton
  • SP Dillon Gee

Cut:

  • SP Kyle Lohse
  • UT Jeff Baker
  • OF Nate McLouth

Notes:

  • Trade: OF Braun was selected for $42 in the 2011 WBRL auction. RP Qualls was selected in the 2nd Round of the minor league draft, thus the $7 salary.  Both are protectable for 2012 and 2013.  Hanrahan is protectable for only 2012, but Miller is protectable as a minor-leaguer.  Miller was the first-overall minor league selection by Misogynistic Padres ($8 price), who released him April 19th.  The RoadRunners picked him up for $1 FAAB bid on June 14th.
  • Additional FAAB bids were placed on new Padres 1B/UT Jesus Guzman for $1, and for Braves OF Jose Constanza ($1).  They were acquired by Get Off Kong! (Guzman – $15), and by Cover Zero (Constanza – $94).
  • RP Hernandez had previously been acquired by Get Off Kong! on April 12th (released June 28th) and July 5th (released August 2nd).  His salary is $5 from that first pickup.
  • OF Chris Heisey was placed on the 15-Day DL on August 6th with an oblique injury.  He is expected to be out 3-4 weeks.

Roster Moves – Week 17 – July 19, 2011

FAAB Acquisitions:

  • 1B Brandon Allen, Diamondbacks ($6 bid, add to actives at CM)

Up:

  • OF Nate McLouth
  • SP Charlie Morton

Down:

  • OF Jon Jay
  • CM Jeff Baker
  • RP Kenley Jansen

Cut:

  • SP Edinson Volquez

Notes:

  • The Diamondbacks called up 1B Brandon Allen from Triple-A Reno to start following the All-Star break.  1B Juan Miranda (originally owned by AaRr in 2011) was sent outright to Triple-A Reno. Allen will share some time with 1B/LF Xavier Nady.
  • The only other bids for Brandon Allen was from Shoeless Jews, who is the current owner of Juan Miranda.
  • Allen had previously been on the 2011 Roadrunners, having been picked up as a half-ass alternate bid on May 24th, and subsequently released on May 31st.
  • Cover Zero had originally acquired Allen in the 2011 auction for $1, and was released April 26th.
  • Speaking of former 2011 RoadRunners, Cover Zero acquired Rockies RP Rafael Betancourt with a $0 bid.

Roster Moves – Week 14 – June 28, 2011

Up:

  • OF Nate McLouth
  • OF Chris Heisey
  • CM Jeff Baker
  • SP Kyle Lohse

Down:

  • OF Jose Tabata
  • OF Charles Blackmon
  • CM Anthony Rizzo
  • SP Edinson Volquez
Notes:
  • Pirates OF Jose Tabata was placed on the 15-day DL on Friday 6/24 with a strained quad muscle.

Roster Moves – Week 12 – June 14, 2011

FAAB Acquisitions:

  • C Ronny Paulino, Mets ($6 bid), add to actives
  • 1B Paul Goldschmidt, Diamondbacks ($3 bid), reserve
  • SP Shelby Miller, Cardinals ($1 bid), reserve

Up:

  • OF Matt Holliday
  • SP Tim Stauffer

Down:

  • SP Kyle Lohse
  • OF Jon Jay

Cut:

  • C Henry Blanco
  • RP Vicente Padilla
  • RP Hong-Chih Kuo

Notes:

  • It was announced that RP Vicente Padilla would require surgery on the bulging disc in his neck, the same injury that had him open the season on the DL. He’ll be out a while.
  • Padilla’s teammate on the Dodger’s DL, Hong-Chih Kuo, was released for the second time this season. Kuo had been protected from 2010, was released on May 24th when he went on the DL with an anxiety disorder, was picked up May 31st when his rehab starts went well, and has since hit a bit of a wall.  So, as I’m tired of chasing non-existent Dodgers saves, he and Padilla are gone, as (while all this was going on), Jonathan Broxton is rehabbing as well, and will likely beat him back to the active roster.  We still have Kenley Jansen, however.
  • C Ronny Paulino was released by Cover Zero last week.  (He had been FAAB’d for $0 bid by Cover Zero on May 17th). He then proceeded to go 4-for-4 with a homer and three RBI. This is Paulino’s fourth visit on the RoadRunners.  He was on the roster as a Pirate in 2006 and 2007, and also was on the 2010 Championship squad, before he was suspended for 50 games (PED use) with 42 games left to play.  He’s still no Buster Posey, but he’s seeing more action than Henry Blanco.
  • 1B Paul Goldschmidt leads the minor leagues in home runs at Double-A Mobile, and is rumored to be called up after the All-Star break. In 233 at-bats for the Bay Bears, he is batting .348, with 21 home runs, 59 RBI and 6 steals. Plus, he sports a 53/46 BB/SO ratio.  His OPS is 1.156 – that’s ridiculous.
  • SP Shelby Miller was the No. 1 overall WBRL minor league pick by Misogynistic Padres, but was released April 19th.  Thus his $8 salary. He was the 19th overall pick in 2009 out of a Texas high school, and he is (as per Keith Law) the best pitching prospect in the minors. He dominated Single-A, and was promoted two weeks ago to Double-A.  Probably won’t get called up in 2011.
  • Former 2011 RoadRunner Chris Capuano was grabbed for $12 FAAB by Get Off Kong! (and Chris Narveson was his second contingency bid at $2).
  • Speaking of Narveson, he was selected by Goodfellas for $1 FAAB (GOK!’s $2 would have gotten him), beating out Misogynistic Padres and their $0 bid.
  • Injury Update: 2B Jeff Baker was activated Monday from the 15-Day DL.  OF Matt Holliday will be activated Thursday 6/16 from the 15-Day DL.  OF Nate McLouth remains on the 15-Day DL, but will return in the next week.  RP Kenley Jansen is making rehab appearances, and is likely a week away from returning.

Roster Moves – Week 11 – June 7, 2011

FAAB Acquisitions:

  • OF Charles Blackmon, Rockies ($0 bid), Add to actives at UT

Up:

  • 1B Anthony Rizzo (to CM)
  • SP Edinson Volquez

Move:

  • CM Chris Nelson (to 2B)
  • UT Jon Jay (to OF)

Down:

  • 2B Jeff Baker
  • OF Matt Holliday
  • SP Tim Stauffer

Cut:

  • 2B Jose Lopez

Notes:

  • It is widely speculated that the Padres will call up Rizzo on Wednesday to play 1B, as 1B Brad Hawpe has been starting in right field the past two days.  At Triple-A Tucson, Rizzo is batting .365, with 16 homers and 20 doubles.
  • Jose Lopez was released, as he’s still in MLB limbo – designated for assignment, but no takers, and no announcements since that move was made.
  • OF Matt Holliday was placed on the 15-Day DL with a quadriceps strain. He’s eligible to return June 16th.
  • 2B Jeff Baker still has another week until his return from his groin strain. He is expected to return June 14th.
  • SP Edinson Volquez is expected to be recalled from Triple-A Louisville this week.
  • New OF Charles Blackmon was called up from Triple-A Colorado Springs, where he was hitting .337 with 10 homers, 49 RBI and 12 steals thus far.  OF Dexter Fowler was placed on the DL, and Blackmon is exptected to play in right field, with Carlos Gonzalez moving to center, though he may split time with Ryan Spilborghs.
  • Goodfellas released former 2011 RoadRunner Jorge Cantu.
  • Get Off Kong! selected former 2011 RoadRunner Chris Capuano as a contingency bid, but won the bidding for Rockies arm Rex Brothers.
  • On the Atomic RoadRunners eight-man reserve roster, only two players are not on the disabled list: SP Tim Stauffer and Catching prospect Devin Mesoraco. In addition to Baker and Holliday, OF Nate McLouth, and all three Dodgers relievers (Kuo, Padilla, Jansen) are on the DL as well.

Roster Moves – Week 10 – May 31, 2011

FAAB Acquisitions:

  • C Henry Blanco, Diamondbacks ($1 bid) – add to actives
  • SP Dillon Gee, Mets ($6 bid) – add to actives
  • IF Chris Nelson, Rockies ($0 bid) – add to actives at CM
  • RP Hong-Chih Kuo, Dodgers ($2 bid) – reserve

Up:

  • SP Tim Stauffer

Down:

  • CM Jose Lopez
  • RP Vicente Padilla

Cut:

  • C Buster Posey
  • 1B/OF Brandon Allen
  • MI/3B Mike Fontenot
  • SP Chris Narveson

Notes:

  • What a week – possibly the worst ever in AaRr History
    • On Wednesday, May 25th, Marlins OF Scott Cousins collided with C Buster Posey in the 11th inning. Posey flipped with his spikes stuck in the ground, and suffered ankle ligament tears and a broken fibula. After successful surgery, it was announced that he would be out for the year. I was hoping Posey’s AaRr farewell would be another title parade, not a release in May due to injury.
    • The next day, Thursday, May 26th, the Giants also placed SS/3B Mike Fontenot on the 15-Day DL with a left groin strain.  Fontenot was injured in the same game as Posey was. Fontenot was cut due to the AaRr roster crunch.
    • Later that day, frustrated with their bench (and me frustrated with Jim Tracy”s managing style and roster construction), the Rockies designated 2B/3B Jose Lopez for assignment.  There’s now ten days to see if anyone wants him, or if he’ll accept an assignment to Triple-A (if that’s even an option).  The situation wasn’t resolved for our WBRL transaction deadline, so we’ll hang onto him to see what transpires this week.
    • Sunday, Dodgers RP Kenley Jansen was placed on the 15-Day DL with shoulder inflammation.
    • Monday, Cubs 2B Jeff Baker was placed on the 15-Day DL with a groin strain. I have to keep him active, as I have no other 2B available.
    • Keep in mind, both RP Vicente Padilla (forearm) and OF Nate McLouth (oblique) had been placed on the DL in week 8 (May 19th and 23rd, respectively).  Also, on May 23rd, SP Edinson Volquez was sent down to Triple-A.
  • So, the acquisitions:
    • C Henry Blanco was the best of a bad crop of replacement catchers. He’s a backup with pop.  Dodgers’ C Dioner Navarro was the contingency bid.
    • RP Hong-Chih Kuo re-joins the squad, though he’s still on the 15-Day DL for his anxiety disorder.  Reports have him throwing at 90% in rehab appearances.  Although I really should cut our losses with chasing the Dodger bullpen.  Five different pitchers earned their most-recent five saves. Contingency bids were Mets RP Bobby Parnell and Pirates RP Jose Veras.
    • IF Nelson has some pop and has some positional flexibility.  Maybe Jim Tracy will give him a shot at 2B, while EY Jr. is forcing Dexter Fowler to the pine.  I figured that Tracy would peg reserve Jonathan Herrera as the starter over Lopez after Spring Training.  Contingency bids were Padres 2B Logan Forsythe (in for injured Orlando Hudson). I declined to bid on Giants SS Brandon Crawford because he didn’t have 2B eligibility.
  • On top of all that, OnRoto had a hard drive crash (the “baseball3” server), so FAAB bids weren’t processed until 14 hours later than usual.  Roster moves for this period are being updated manually by the Commissioner – yours truly.

Roster Moves – Week 3 – April 12, 2011

FAAB Acquisitions:

  • SP Esmil Rogers, Rockies ($5 FAAB bid), add to actives

Up:

  • OF Matt Holliday
  • SP Mat Latos
  • SP Chris Narveson
  • RP Kenley Jansen

Move:

  • 2B Jeff Baker (from UT)
  • CM Jose Lopez (from 2B)
  • UT Chris Heisey (from OF)

Down:

  • CM Juan Miranda
  • SP Tim Stauffer
  • RP Rafael Betancourt
  • RP Hong-Chih Kuo

Cut:

  • CM Jorge Cantu

Notes:

  • SP Mat Latos was activated from the 15-Day DL (shoulder bursitis) and pitched well against the Reds Monday night.
  • OF Matt Holliday started Sunday, having been sidelined due to an emergency appendectomy for nine days.

Roster Moves – Week 1 – March 31st, 2011

[Roster moves from Draft]

Up:

  • RP Bobby Parnell
  • 2B Jeff Baker (to UT)

Down:

  • SP: Edinson Volquez
  • 1B Anthony Rizzo (from UT)

Notes:

  • 1B Anthony Rizzo was sent to minor league camp last week, and will likely open the season at AA San Antonio. Update: He’s opening the season at AAA Tucson
  • SP Mat Latos was placed on the 15-Day DL due to shoulder issues – an inflamed bursa sac.  The move was retroactive to March 22nd, so he should be eligible to come off the DL on April 6th.
  • SP Edinson Volquez has been very wild in Spring Training, and we are hesitant to run him out to the mound on Opening Day – taking a wait-and-see approach.
  • 2B Jeff Baker was in the mix for the starting 2B job for the Cubs, but will likely split time with Darwin Barney and Blake DeWitt
  • 2B Jose Lopez is still in flux, as the Rockies manager Jim Tracy is giving utilityman Jonathan Herrera a long look at 2B.
