Roster Moves – 2010 End-of-Season

Following each WBRL season, all non-protectable players are released back into the player pool, and reserved players not eligible for protection in the minor leagues are promoted to the active roster:

Up:

  • SP Mat Latos
  • SP Wade LeBlanc
  • RP Aroldis Chapman
  • RP Kenley Jansen
  • 1B Adam LaRoche
  • OF Marlon Byrd
  • 3B Casey Blake

Released / WBRL contract expired:

  • 1B Albert Pujols
  • 3B Chase Headley
  • SP Josh Johnson
  • SP Clayton Kershaw
  • SP Johnny Cueto

Released / Signed After Protection Deadline:

  • C A.J. Ellis
  • 2B Jonathan Herrera
  • SS Angel Sanchez
  • OF Cameron Maybin

Released / Non-Protectable Due to AL-NL Trade:

  • SP Dan Hudson

Remaining in Minors:

  • OF Trayvon Robinson

Final Roster Moves – Week 26 – September 28th, 2010

Up:

  • MI Angel Sanchez
  • OF Lorenzo Cain (to UT)
  • SP Randy Wells
  • RP Tyler Clippard

Down:

  • MI Jonathan Herrera
  • OF Marlon Byrd
  • SP Johnny Cueto
  • RP Kenley Jansen

Notes:

  • Cueto is pretty much gassed for the year, having matched Latos in giving up 8 ER in 1-1/3 IP last week.  Meanwhile, Wells has rebounded and is pitching solidly again.
  • Byrd may not play again this season.  He has a swollen eye after a foul-tip hit him in the face – he’s been inactive since Friday. Cain has been hot of late, so we’ll try to hold off the masses in the .AVG category.

Meet the New Guys: A.J. Ellis, Jonathan Herrera (again)

Ellis gets acquired due to his high batting average as a replacement for the disabled Russell Martin. With the RoadRunners’ Geovany Soto undergoing season-ending shoulder surgery yesterday (and not protectable), we need all the assistance we can get. Ellis was sent down to the minors when the team acquired Rod Barajas, but he’s back now that rosters have expanded. The 29-year-old catcher is batting .174 in 69 at-bats with the Dodgers this season. (Rotoworld)

Herrera re-joins the RoadRunners in 2010, having served well during Troy Tulowitzki’s absence. Now Herrera fills in for Eric Young, Jr., who had been getting plenty of at-bats at second. Herrera reached base four times, scored twice, and stole a base against the Dodgers on Sunday. Herrera singled, doubled, and walked twice to raise his average to .294 in 187 at-bats since joining the Rockies. That he’s added 21 walks make him a useful bench player, but Herrera’s complete lack of power leave him unfit to be a regular. (Rotoworld)

Roster Moves – Week 25 – September 21st, 2010

FAAB Acquisitions:

  • C A.J. Ellis, Dodgers ($0 bid), Add to actives
  • 2B Jonathan Herrera, Rockies ($0 bid), Add to actives at MI

Up:

  • RP Kenley Jansen

Down:

  • MI Angel Sanchez
  • SP Mat Latos

Cut:

  • MI Brooks Conrad
  • C Geovany Soto

Notes:

  • Herrera re-joins the RoadRunners this season.  He was previously FAAB’d for $6 in Week 12 (June 22nd) as backup for Troy Tulowitzki, who went on the DL with the broken wrist.  He was then released in Week 17 (July 27th).
  • Latos was sent down for the rest of the season. He is completely gassed, and he gave up 8 earned in 1-1/3 innings this week.  That’s bad news for the Padres’ playoff hopes.
  • Geovany Soto is out for the remainder of the season.  Soto underwent shoulder surgery on Sunday, and with a three-month recovery time, should be ready for the start of Spring Training.
  • No other FAAB bids were recorded this week.
  • Former two-time 2010 AaRr outfielder Matt Diaz endeared himself to the Philadelphia fans by tripping and aiding in the capture of  a fan that ran onto the field in the bottom of the 7th inning last night.

Roster Moves – Week 24 – September 14th, 2010

FAAB Acquisition:

  • SS Angel Sanchez, Astros ($0 bid) – Active at MI

Up:

  • 3B Chase Headley
  • OF Drew Stubbs (to UT)
  • SP Edinson VolquezCMCM
  • SP Yovani Gallardo
  • SP Ian Kennedy

Move:

  • UT Albert Pujols (to CM)

Down:

  • CM Adam LaRoche
  • MI Brooks Conrad
  • RP Aroldis Chapman
  • RP Tyler Clippard
  • SP Josh Johnson

Cut:

  • MI Geoff Blum

Notes:

  • The Marlins have shut down SP Josh Johnson for the 2010 season. He has an inflamed shoulder and a pulled back muscle, and he missed a throwing session over the weekend.  Since Johnson’s WBRL contract expires after this season, I guess it’s goodbye.
  • Hitting roster moves for this week were made purely on a batting average and stolen base basis.  So LaRoche (who contributes only in HR and RBI and is slumping a bit) goes to the bench for the first time in 2010.  Similarly, slumping 3B Chase Headley gets activated over similarly-slumping Casey Blake, due to Blake’s lack of mobility.
  • The only other team to make FAAB pickups, second-place Get Off Kong!, picked up former 2010 Roadrunner Luis Durango of the Padres.
  • Contingent selections for Sanchez were Colorado’s Jonathan Herrera (previously on the 2010 Roadrunners), and Cubs’ MI Darwin Barney.

Say Goodbye To: Demel, Herrera, Infante

RP – Sam Demel
Acquired: June 29th, 2010 ($2 FAAB)
Released: July 27th, 2010
A closer for the A’s AAA squad in Sacramento, Demel was acquired by the Diamondbacks in a trade for Conor Jackson in June. Viewed as a possible solution for the ailing Arizona bullpen, Demel did not win the favor of then-manager A.J. Hinch, and was relegated to 7th-inning duties – but at least he didn’t completely implode like his bullpen cohorts Chad Qualls and Juan Gutierrez

2B – Jonathan Herrera
Acquired: June 22nd, 2010 ($6 FAAB)
Released: July 27th, 2010
Acquired due to the injury to SS Troy Tulowitzki, Herrera was a pleasant suprise with decent batting average. Better though, at least for AaRr, was that he was plugged into the lineup almost daily, so Herrera helped bring some consitency to the Roadrunners while our star shortstop was out with injury. However, Tulo returned, and Herrera went to being a late-inning bat off the bench and defensive replacement.

MI – Omar Infante
Acquired: 2010 WBRL Auction ($1)
Released: July 27th, 2010
Originally acquired in the end-game of the auction, after having been shut out of other MI players such as Brendan Ryan, Ian Desmond, etc. With no starting job, Infante is a good MI backup, which on a team like the Atlanta Braves, is necessary given the fragility of 3B Chipper Jones and 1B Troy Glaus (which would then see 2B Martin Prado move to cover, and Infante come in at 2B). Infante to this point in the season has not really found consistency in hitting or playing time, even though he was voted to the 2010 All-Star team. Clearly, I had him activated during his “slumps”.

Roster Moves – Week 17 – July 27th, 2010

FAAB Acquisitions:

  • 2B Luis Castillo, Mets ($2 bid) – Activate at MI
  • RP Kenley Jansen, Dodgers ($2 bid) – Reserve
  • OF Matt Diaz, Braves ($1 bid) – Activate at UT

Up:

  • SS Troy Tulowitzki
  • RP Joel Hanrahan

Down:

  • RP Drew Storen
  • OF Roger Bernadina (from UT)
  • SS Cristian Guzman (from MI)

Cut:

  • SS Jonathan Herrera
  • RP Sam Demel
  • SS Omar Infante

Notes:

  • Tulowitzki will be activated from the DL (broken wrist) later today.
  • Matt Diaz re-joins the 2010 Roadrunners.  He had been released back on May 18th due to a terrible slump and subsequent thumb injury.  He’s been raking (as usual) against lefties since his return at the All-Star Break.  He’s the first player to re-join the 2010 squad that had previously been cut.
  • Bidding on Diaz was light.  I bid $2, and out-bid X-Men ($1).  Get Off Kong! had a $3 conditional bid on Diaz, but he received his primary target of Pirates OF Delwyn Young.
  • X-Men also bid $1 on Kenley Jansen, but I again out-bid him with my superior $2 bid.
  • Luis Castillo has not been a favorite of the Roadrunner front office, but he was released by Cover Zero last week (when he picked up new Braves SS Alex Gonzalez).  Castillo was drafted for $3, so his salary is assigned.
  • It’s just a coincidence that all three players sent down this week were Nationals. No, really.
  • The MLB non-waiver trade deadline is Saturday.  Thus far, there hasn’t been much talk of major players coming to the NL.  Cliff Lee was already traded (from Seattle to Texas), and Dan Haren was dumped on the Angels.  Thus far the big movers to the NL have been the aforementioned Gonzalez (who went for $100), and former Angels’ SP Joe Saunders ($25 to Get Off Kong!) now on the Diamondbacks.  Which is okay, since I only have $16 left.

Roster Moves – Week 16 – July 20th, 2010

FAAB Acquisitions:

  • 1B Brandon Belt, AA Giants – ($3 bid) Reserve
  • OF Trayvon Robinson, AA Dodgers – ($2 bid) Reserve

Up:

  • SS Cristian Guzman
  • OF Roger Bernadina (to UT)
  • SP Edinson Volquez

Down:

  • SS Jonathan Herrera
  • 3B Casey Blake (from UT)
  • SP Ian Kennedy

Cut:

  • SP Chris Volstad
  • SP John Ely

Notes:

  • Volquez made his debut on Saturday night in his return from Tommy John surgery, going 6 innings, with 1 earned run, 3 hits, 2 walks, and 9 strikeouts over 96 pitches against the Rockies.  I’d say he’s back, but he may have some wildness.
  • I bid $16 for new Atlanta SS Alex Gonzalez.  The bidding was as follows: $100 Cover Zero, $79 Misogynistic Padres, $53 X-Men, $16 AaRr.  I should have known beforehand, as Steve was making Gonzalez available prior to the FAAB run ($100 max bid + last place= no tie-breakers)
  • Belt and Robinson were signed as today was the deadline for acquiring players protectable in the minor leagues.
  • Backup bids for Belt and Robinson were former Roadrunner SP Christian Friedrich and Reds SS Zach Cozart

Roster Moves – Week 13 – June 29th, 2010

FAAB Acquisitions:

  • RP Sam Demel, Diamondbacks ($2 bid), Add to actives
  • RP Hong-Chih Kuo, Dodgers ($1 bid), Add to actives

Up:

  • SS Jonathan Herrera
  • SP Chris Volstad
  • SP John Ely

Down:

  • SS Omar Infante
  • RP Drew Storen
  • RP Tyler Clippard
  • SP Randy Wells
  • SP Ian Kennedy

Cut:

  • SP Christian Friedrich (AA – Minors)
  • SP Jordan Lyles (AA – Minors)

Notes:

  • SP Madison Bumgarner was called up from AAA Fresno Saturday, June 26th, for his 2010 debut against the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park.
  • Hong-Chih Kuo rejoins the Roadrunners for the first time since 2007, when he helped the pitching staff as a starter in the second half.
  • Kuo was originally drafted this season by Get Off Kong! (11th Round, 2010 Minor League Draft), but he was released on May 4th.
  • Kuo was a second contingency FAAB selection by Cover Zero.
  • The Pi Train bid $1 on Sam Demel, but was outbid by yours truly.
  • Cover Zero selected former 2o1o Roadrunner Jose Contreras for $0 FAAB bid.
  • Demel’s contract is for 1 year, as he came over from the Oakland A’s AAA Sacramento affiliate to the Diamondbacks in the Conor Jackson trade two weeks ago.

Meet the New Guys: Danny Espinosa, Jonathan Herrera

Nationals middle infield prospect Danny Espinosa is picked up because A. the minor-league protection deadline is approching, B. I saw him play in the Arizona Fall League, C. his No. 8 jersey was the model for the Atomic RoadRunners No. 8 jersey, and D., he’s raking at AA.

Rockies 2B Jonathan Herrera is added to the roster due to the injury to Troy Tulowitzki. The Rockies will move 2B Clint Barmes over to SS, and Herrera will get at-bats. Herrera hit .286 at AAA-Colorado Springs, and hit his first major league homer Sunday against the Giants.
