Say Goodbye To: Diaz, Gutierrez, Hawkins

Braves OF Matt Diaz was protected by the Roadrunners for 2010 based on his ability to hit .300, and register 10+ homers and steals in a platoon arrangement. Well, like the rest of the Braves this season, he has faltered. Diaz hasn’t cracked the Mendoza line, and only rookie Jason Heyward has provided any punch in the outfield. Making matters worse, utility man Eric Hinske has been playing left field, and Diaz went and injured his thumb, to the point where it became infected, required surgery, and had to be placed on the 15-Day DL.

Juan Gutierrez was a 9th-round minor league selection in 2010 by the Roadrunners. He saved 8 games in September of 2009 when Diamondbacks closer Chad Qualls was out with a knee injury, but he hasn’t been himself this season. He has 1 save (in minors) and multiple blown saves. Manager A.J. Hinch finally lost his patience with his struggling bullpen. Hinch said over the weekend “all bets are off” regarding relief roles after both right-handers Juan Gutierrez and Chad Qualls were charged with blown saves in a 6-5 loss in Atlanta on Friday. “I want everybody to be ready all the time,” Hinch said. “I don’t think there should be any expectations down there at this point. I think they should be ready to go after the starter and we’ll do our best to patch it together.” Gutierrez has one save and two blown saves with a 9.20 ERA so far this season, and has 4 losses and two blown saves.

LaTroy Hawkins was a 11th-round minor league selection in 2010 by the Roadrunners. He saved 1 games in 2009 when Astros closer Jose Valverde was out with a knee injury, but he hasn’t been himself this season. He was unable to take advantage of closer Trevor Hoffman’s woes, and is now on the 15-Day DL with a bum shoulder. He will be limiting the stress on his shoulder until he undergoes a strength test on Monday, restricting his activity to conditioning work and shoulder strengthening exercises. This makes it likely that Hawkins will not be ready to rejoin the Brewers on May 22, the day he is eligible to be activated. Hawkins has been battling this shoulder issue since spring training, which would explain his ineffectiveness this season. Looking at the active/reserve splits below, you can see why I like him, but am tired of him as well – bad timing.

Roster Moves – Week 7 – May 18th, 2010

FAAB Acquisitions:

  • RP Jose Contreras, Phillies ($42 bid), Add to Actives
  • SP John Ely, Dodgers ($5 bid), Add to Actives
  • OF Roger Bernadina ($2 bid), Add to Actives

Up:

  • UT Cristian Guzman

Move:

  • 3B Chase Headley

Down:

  • 3B Casey Blake
  • RP Tyler Clippard
  • OF Jody Gerut

Cut:

  • OF Matt Diaz
  • RP Juan Gutierrez
  • RP LaTroy Hawkins

Notes:

  • Contreras was a possible draft-day target, but slipped of f the charts with Ryan Madson (protected) and Brad Lidge (drafted). Now with both on the DL (Madson until July, Lidge uncertain), Contreras is the man, and I need saves.  Only other bids: Shoeless Jews ($13)
  • Both X-Men and Misogynistic Padres put in $0 bids on Ely
  • Goodfellas bid $0 on Bernadina
  • My contingency bid for Bernadina was for Mets OF Chris Carter.  Since I got Bernadina, he went to X-Men for a $0 bid.
  • Shoeless Jews picked up former Roadrunner Takashi Saito for a $0 bid, whom I released last week
  • OF Matt Diaz was placed on the 15-Day DL on Saturday (May 15th) with an injured and infected thumb.
  • RP LaTroy Hawkins has been on the 15-Day DL for over a week, with no update on his status.
  • The Washington Nationals promoted RP Drew Storen from AAA to the major-league squad.
  • In the process of calling up Storen, former Roadrunner Brian Bruney was designated for assignment Sunday (May 16th)
  • Former Roadrunner Willy Taveras was designated for assignment on Monday (May 17th).

Roster Moves – Week 6 – May 11th, 2010

FAAB Acquisitions:

  • OF Jody Gerut, Brewers ($0 bid) – Add to Actives

Up:

  • RP Juan Gutierrez

Down:

  • RP LaTroy Hawkins
  • OF Matt Diaz

Cut:

  • RP Takashi Saito

Notes:

  • Jody Gerut re-joins the Roadrunners for 2010.  Gerut had been on the 2008 squad (and was a great pickup) and the 2009 squad (protected from 2009), but was released following his trade to Milwaukee in May of 2009.
  • Gerut was originally drafted in the 2010 minor league draft by Stanimals, as a 10th-round minor league selection, and was subsequently released on April 13th, 2010.
  • First choice FAAB OF Cole Gillespie of the Diamondbacks was selected with a $0 FAAB bid by Goodfellas, who won the tie-break due to standings. Gerut was the contingency.
  • On Sunday morning (5/9/2010) RP LaTroy Hawkins was placed on the 15-Day DL with shoulder weakness.
  • Originally, MI Cristian Guzman was going to be activated at OF for Matt Diaz, as he has 18 games at SS, 9 games at 2B, and 3 games at OF – just meeting the 10% positional eligibility rule.  However, late last night the Brewers placed OF Carlos Gomez on the 15-day DL with a rotator cuff strain, so Gerut should see some at-bats.

Roster Moves – Week 5 – May 4th, 2010

FAAB Acquisitions:

  • C Jason Jaramillo, Pirates ($0 bid) – Add to Actives
  • OF Jose Tabata, Pirates ($0 bid) – AAA Reserve

  • Sean Marshall, acquired by the Atomic Roadrunners on April 20th, and released last week, was a FAAB selection by Get Off Kong! for $5.
  • Jose Tabata rejoins the Roadrunners.  He was a 6th round minor league selection last season (2009), but was released May 5th, 2009.
  • Tabata was originally drafted in 2010 by The Pi Train, as an 8th Round minor league pick.  He was subsequently released for Week 1 (April 6th).

Roster Moves – Week 3 – April 20th, 2010

FAAB Acquisitions:

  • RP Sean Marshall, Cubs ($0 bid)
  • RP Burke Badenhop, Marlins ($0 bid) – Add to Actives

Up:

  • RP Takashi Saito

Down:

  • RP  Nick Masset
  • RP LaTroy Hawkins

Cut:

  • RP Brian Bruney
  • 1B Mike Jacobs

Notes:

  • On April 18th, the Mets designated 1B Mike Jacobs for assignment, and called up 1B prospect Ike Davis.  Jacobs would later accept the assignment to become 1B at AAA Buffalo.
  • On April 20th, Major League Baseball announced that Reds SP Edinson Volquez was suspended 50 games for testing positive for a performance-enhancing drug (PED).  Volquez’s suspension starts tomorrow (April 21) and will be served concurrently with his rehabilitation from Tommy John surgery while he’s on the 60-Day Disabled List.
  • Contingent Bids:
    • The contingent bid for the Sean Marshall acquisition was a $0 bid on Pirates reliever Joel Hanrahan.
    • The contingent bid for the Burke Badenhop acquisition was a $0 bid on Brewers reliever Carlos Villanueva, followed by a $0 bid on Cubs starter Carlos Silva
  • Sean Marshall re-joins the Atomic Roadrunners for his third season.  Marshall was also on the 2007  and 2008 squads.
    • 2007 – FAAB selection for $6 on May 29th, stayed on the roster all season, not protected.
    • 2008 – FAAB selection for $2 on June 24th, stayed on the roster one week, released July 1st.

Hawkins Torched for Second Time in a Row

Brewers RP LaTroy Hawkins blew his second save of the week, and the year, on Friday against the Nationals. “It’s not going to happen too often, but it did happen back-to-back games,” Hawkins said. “Kind of weird, but I accept it. Just didn’t get the job done.” He entered the eighth inning with a 3-2 lead but allowed three hits and three runs to lose the lead, and the game for the Brewers. It was Hawkins sixth appearance of the year and it raised his ERA to 11.81. Another bad outing for Hawkins. Good news is that he is not the closer, but he isn’t even giving Brewers closer Trevor Hoffman a chance to get the save. He has had a sub-four ERA the past three season so Fantasy owners shouldn’t start panicking just yet. Hawkins remains a Fantasy flier in leagues that use true middle men and reward heavily for holds. (CBS Sports)

Hawkins Blows a Big One Against Cubs

LaTroy Hawkins struggled against the Cubs on Wednesday and gave up four runs on three hits while walking a pair in the eighth inning. The rally allowed the Cubs to pick up a victory on Wednesday. Considering that Trevor Hoffman had a pair of blown saves against the Cardinals last weekend, Hawkins’ chances of seeing time in the ninth inning have increased slightly. Being lights out in the setup role might have helped his slim chance, but a rough showing on Wednesday for Hawkins should lengthen the leash on Hoffman. “It is a concern of ours, giving up runs,” Hawkins said. “But it’s part of the game. Instead of giving up crooked numbers, we just got to give up that straight number. One run instead of two or three runs at a time.” (Rotowire, CBS Sports)
