Say Goodbye to: Luis Castillo, Matt Diaz (again)

2B – Luis Castillo
Acquired: July 27th, 2010 ($2 FAAB)
Released: August 17th, 2010
Originally drafted by Cover Zero for $3 in the 2010 auction, Castillo had been plagued by injuries all season, but was activated from the DL when picked up last month. Unfortnately, he still stinks, and it’s not just the injuries. Oh, and by the way, in the three weeks since Castillo was picked up and Omar Infante dropped, Infante has batted .378 with 12 runs, and 2 steals – and was promptly picked up by Goodfellas. Ugh. That may have been a mistake.

OF – Matt Diaz
Acquired: Re-acquired July 27th, 2010 ($1 FAAB)
Released: August 17th, 2010
Diaz, the first RoadRunner to be re-acquired three weeks ago, becomes the first RoadRunner to be released twice in the 2010 season. At the time, it seemed like a good idea, but there were better performers on the AaRr bench, and we needed different stats, specifically steals (thus Bernadina and Cain were activated in his place).

Roster Moves – Week 20 – August 17th, 2010

Trade:

  • Atomic Roadrunners receives:
    • 1B Albert Pujols, Cardinals (active at UT)
    • C Geovani Soto, Cubs (active at C)
    • SP Yovani Gallardo, Brewers (active)
    • SP Daniel Hudson, Diamondbacks (active)
  • The Pi Train receives:
    • RP Drew Storen, Nationals
    • SP Madison Bumgarner, Giants
    • 1B Brandon Belt, Giants (minors)

FAAB Acquisitions:

  • 2B Brooks Conrad, Braves ($2 bid), Add to actives

Up:

  • RP Hong-Chih Kuo

Down:

  • C Ronny Paulino
  • OF Lorenzo Cain
  • SP Randy Wells

Cut:

  • 2B Luis Castillo
  • OF Matt Diaz

Notes:

  • Cubs C Geovany Soto is currently on the 15-Day disabled list (retroactive to August 7th) with an injured throwing shoulder.  There are chances that he will not return this season, but the latest news is that he’s scheduled to take batting practice later today, and may return on Sunday, August 22nd.
  • The Pi Train had coveted Storen all summer, and Bumgarner only has one season remaining on his contract.
  • Goodfellas picked up former Roadrunner Danny Espinosa of the Nationals.  There’s a chance he might get a September audition, but he can no longer be protected in the minor leagues (this season).
  • Of the new acquisitions, only Gallardo is protectable (2/$27). Both Soto ($10) and Pujols ($37) have expiring contracts, and Hudson was traded in-season from the White Sox (AL) in the Edwin Jackson deal.
  • In a stunning move, Pirate Smokers made transactions today.  Having only previously made a move on April 27th (Jason Heyward up, Carlos Beltran down), Mark made two pickups (Octavio Dotel and Sergio Casilla), activated Beltran finally (he came off the DL in July) and finally sent down Brandon Webb (60-Day DL, likely to miss all of 2010).

Roster Moves – Week 19 – August 10th, 2010

FAAB Acquisitions:

  • OF Lorenzo Cain, Brewers ($13 Bid), add to actives

Up:

  • SP Edinson Volquez
  • 2B Luis Castillo (to MI)

Down:

  • OF Drew Stubbs
  • RP Hong-Chih Kuo
  • MI Cristian Guzman

Cut:

  • C Chris Iannetta

Notes:

  • Get Off Kong! also bid on Lorenzo Cain (slated to be the new Brewers starting CF), with a $0 bid (even though his $12 remaining was the basis of my $13 bid).

Roster Moves – Week 18 – August 3rd, 2010

Up:

  • C Ronny Paulino
  • MI Cristian Guzman
  • OF Roger Bernadina (to UT)
  • RP Drew Storen

Down:

  • C Chris Iannetta
  • MI Luis Castillo
  • OF Matt Diaz
  • SP Edinson Volquez

Notes:

  • SS Cristian Guzman was traded to the Texas Rangers on July 29th in a deadline deal.  He’ll start at 2B while Ian Kinsler is on the DL (expected until the end of August).
  • RP Drew Storen has seen his path to saves become a bit clearer.  Nationals closer Matt Capps was dealt to the Twins in a July 27th trade.  For now, Storen, fellow RoadRunner Tyler Clippard, and Sean Burnett will rotate for saves, though Burnett got the save last night. Update: It was a 1-2/3 inning save after Burnett entered to face a lefty.  Storen had pitched 2 innings Sunday.
  • RP Joel Hanrahan is also in a position for more saves, with the trade of Pirates closer Octavio Dotel to the Dodgers on July 31st.  He and Evan Meek will vie for ninth-inning duties.
  • The Braves acquired Royals OF Rick Ankiel, who will be added to the LF/CF mix, so Matt Diaz will likely see a decrease in ABs.
  • The Shoeless Jews picked up former 2010 RoadRunner Chris Volstad, who was called up from AAA two weeks ago.  Volstad isn’t really protectable at $10.
  • Misogynistic Padres picked up former 2010 RoadRunner Juan Gutierrez.  Gutierrez is blowing the majority of the save opportunities for new Diamondback’s manager Kirk Gibson.  Seriously, he’s 0-6 with 3 saves and an ERA of 6.69, which is down from earlier this year.
  • Goodfellas took advantage of a RoadRunner mistake, picking up MI Omar Infante of the Braves for a $1 FAAB bid (I had bid $0).  Infante was released last week in the Luis Castillo gambit, but will now be the starting 2B with Martin Prado on the DL.  Goodfellas has Prado, so perhaps it was just a case of picking up the backup.
  • In the first FAAB bidding since the MLB trade deadline, bids were fast and furious.  The only player I bid on was new Dodgers OF Scott Podsednik, who came over from the Royals.  Here was the bidding:  $93 (X-Men), $75 (Misogynistic Padres), $47 (Goodfellas), $29 (Get Off Kong), $16 (AaRr), $5 (Pi Train)

Meet the New Guys: Castillo, Diaz, Jansen

Mets starting 2B Luis Castillo was picked up as he’s now off the DL, and he was released by Cover Zero last week. Castillo has never been a favorite of the AaRr front office, but we’re in need of average and steals, and he should be able to provide something in that regard. Luis Castillo was 2-for-4 with a run scored in his return from the disabled list against the Diamondbacks on Monday night. Castillo also seemed to be moving around pretty well — for him, anyway — so it looks like the problems with his feet are behind him. While the veteran second baseman is a marked improvement over either Alex Cora or Ruben Tejada, he still isn’t a particularly desirable option, even in NL-only leagues. (Rotoworld)

Matt Diaz re-joins the 2010 Roadrunners. He had been released back on May 18th due to a terrible slump and subsequent thumb injury. He’s been raking (as usual) against lefties since his return at the All-Star Break. He’s the first player to re-join the 2010 squad that had previously been cut. Matt Diaz finished 3-for-5 on Tuesday night with a pair of doubles, one of which drove in the go-ahead run in the top of the 11th as Atlanta topped Philadelphia 4-3. (Rotoworld)

Dodgers reliever Kenley Jansen is a fireballer that was promoted from AA Chattanooga. “We’ve talked about him — I really liked his personality in the spring,” said Dodgers manager Joe Torre . “I think at some point this year you’ll probably see him. I may be talking out of school there, but we’ve talked enough about him that I think by September, if not before.” Jansen, a former catcher, has a 1.32 ERA in 29 relief appearances between High-A Inland Empire and Double-A Chattanooga this season. The 22-year-old right-hander has averaged 14.9 K/9 over 41 innings. (Rotoworld)

Roster Moves – Week 17 – July 27th, 2010

FAAB Acquisitions:

  • 2B Luis Castillo, Mets ($2 bid) – Activate at MI
  • RP Kenley Jansen, Dodgers ($2 bid) – Reserve
  • OF Matt Diaz, Braves ($1 bid) – Activate at UT

Up:

  • SS Troy Tulowitzki
  • RP Joel Hanrahan

Down:

  • RP Drew Storen
  • OF Roger Bernadina (from UT)
  • SS Cristian Guzman (from MI)

Cut:

  • SS Jonathan Herrera
  • RP Sam Demel
  • SS Omar Infante

Notes:

  • Tulowitzki will be activated from the DL (broken wrist) later today.
  • Matt Diaz re-joins the 2010 Roadrunners.  He had been released back on May 18th due to a terrible slump and subsequent thumb injury.  He’s been raking (as usual) against lefties since his return at the All-Star Break.  He’s the first player to re-join the 2010 squad that had previously been cut.
  • Bidding on Diaz was light.  I bid $2, and out-bid X-Men ($1).  Get Off Kong! had a $3 conditional bid on Diaz, but he received his primary target of Pirates OF Delwyn Young.
  • X-Men also bid $1 on Kenley Jansen, but I again out-bid him with my superior $2 bid.
  • Luis Castillo has not been a favorite of the Roadrunner front office, but he was released by Cover Zero last week (when he picked up new Braves SS Alex Gonzalez).  Castillo was drafted for $3, so his salary is assigned.
  • It’s just a coincidence that all three players sent down this week were Nationals. No, really.
  • The MLB non-waiver trade deadline is Saturday.  Thus far, there hasn’t been much talk of major players coming to the NL.  Cliff Lee was already traded (from Seattle to Texas), and Dan Haren was dumped on the Angels.  Thus far the big movers to the NL have been the aforementioned Gonzalez (who went for $100), and former Angels’ SP Joe Saunders ($25 to Get Off Kong!) now on the Diamondbacks.  Which is okay, since I only have $16 left.
