Roster Moves – Week 27 – September 27, 2011

Up:

  • OF Matt Holliday
  • OF Chris Heisey (to UT)

Down:

  • OF Bryan LaHair
  • 3B Jimmy Paredes (from UT)

Notes:

  • Final roster moves of the season, which ends after tomorrow’s (Wednesday’s) games, barring a one-game Wild-Card playoff.
  • Holliday had originally injured his finger, and was doubtful for the remainder of the season.  However, with the Cardinals’ push for the Wild Card (they’re 1 game back of the Braves), he returned to action, even though he really can’t grip a bat.
  • In retrospect, Heisey should have been up for all of September, as he’s been on fire.  However, worries about his batting average kept him on the bench.  Now that BA has been settled (we’ll finish in 2nd after batting .202 this week – ouch), he’s up.  Heisey has made himself an interesting proposition for 2012 protection.  More on that during the offseason.

Roster Moves – Week 26 – September 20, 2011

FAAB Acquisitions:

  • 1B/OF Bryan LaHair, Cubs ($0 bid) – Add to actives at OF

Up:

  • RP Wilton Lopez

Down:

  • OF Matt Holliday

Cut:

  • SP Randy Wells

Notes:

  • Final full-week roster move of the season.
  • Only Get Off Kong! and Atomic Roadrunners made pickups this week.  GOK picked up former 2011 RoadRunner Kyle Lohse, who was also on Goodfellas from August 23 to September 13th.
  • OF Matt Holliday is “doubtful” for the rest of the season, due to inflammation of his right middle finger.  As of yesterday, he had yet to resume swinging a bat, even though the Cardinals are 2-1/2 games behind the Braves in the Wild Card race.

Roster Moves – Week 12 – June 14, 2011

FAAB Acquisitions:

  • C Ronny Paulino, Mets ($6 bid), add to actives
  • 1B Paul Goldschmidt, Diamondbacks ($3 bid), reserve
  • SP Shelby Miller, Cardinals ($1 bid), reserve

Up:

  • OF Matt Holliday
  • SP Tim Stauffer

Down:

  • SP Kyle Lohse
  • OF Jon Jay

Cut:

  • C Henry Blanco
  • RP Vicente Padilla
  • RP Hong-Chih Kuo

Notes:

  • It was announced that RP Vicente Padilla would require surgery on the bulging disc in his neck, the same injury that had him open the season on the DL. He’ll be out a while.
  • Padilla’s teammate on the Dodger’s DL, Hong-Chih Kuo, was released for the second time this season. Kuo had been protected from 2010, was released on May 24th when he went on the DL with an anxiety disorder, was picked up May 31st when his rehab starts went well, and has since hit a bit of a wall.  So, as I’m tired of chasing non-existent Dodgers saves, he and Padilla are gone, as (while all this was going on), Jonathan Broxton is rehabbing as well, and will likely beat him back to the active roster.  We still have Kenley Jansen, however.
  • C Ronny Paulino was released by Cover Zero last week.  (He had been FAAB’d for $0 bid by Cover Zero on May 17th). He then proceeded to go 4-for-4 with a homer and three RBI. This is Paulino’s fourth visit on the RoadRunners.  He was on the roster as a Pirate in 2006 and 2007, and also was on the 2010 Championship squad, before he was suspended for 50 games (PED use) with 42 games left to play.  He’s still no Buster Posey, but he’s seeing more action than Henry Blanco.
  • 1B Paul Goldschmidt leads the minor leagues in home runs at Double-A Mobile, and is rumored to be called up after the All-Star break. In 233 at-bats for the Bay Bears, he is batting .348, with 21 home runs, 59 RBI and 6 steals. Plus, he sports a 53/46 BB/SO ratio.  His OPS is 1.156 – that’s ridiculous.
  • SP Shelby Miller was the No. 1 overall WBRL minor league pick by Misogynistic Padres, but was released April 19th.  Thus his $8 salary. He was the 19th overall pick in 2009 out of a Texas high school, and he is (as per Keith Law) the best pitching prospect in the minors. He dominated Single-A, and was promoted two weeks ago to Double-A.  Probably won’t get called up in 2011.
  • Former 2011 RoadRunner Chris Capuano was grabbed for $12 FAAB by Get Off Kong! (and Chris Narveson was his second contingency bid at $2).
  • Speaking of Narveson, he was selected by Goodfellas for $1 FAAB (GOK!’s $2 would have gotten him), beating out Misogynistic Padres and their $0 bid.
  • Injury Update: 2B Jeff Baker was activated Monday from the 15-Day DL.  OF Matt Holliday will be activated Thursday 6/16 from the 15-Day DL.  OF Nate McLouth remains on the 15-Day DL, but will return in the next week.  RP Kenley Jansen is making rehab appearances, and is likely a week away from returning.

Roster Moves – Week 11 – June 7, 2011

FAAB Acquisitions:

  • OF Charles Blackmon, Rockies ($0 bid), Add to actives at UT

Up:

  • 1B Anthony Rizzo (to CM)
  • SP Edinson Volquez

Move:

  • CM Chris Nelson (to 2B)
  • UT Jon Jay (to OF)

Down:

  • 2B Jeff Baker
  • OF Matt Holliday
  • SP Tim Stauffer

Cut:

  • 2B Jose Lopez

Notes:

  • It is widely speculated that the Padres will call up Rizzo on Wednesday to play 1B, as 1B Brad Hawpe has been starting in right field the past two days.  At Triple-A Tucson, Rizzo is batting .365, with 16 homers and 20 doubles.
  • Jose Lopez was released, as he’s still in MLB limbo – designated for assignment, but no takers, and no announcements since that move was made.
  • OF Matt Holliday was placed on the 15-Day DL with a quadriceps strain. He’s eligible to return June 16th.
  • 2B Jeff Baker still has another week until his return from his groin strain. He is expected to return June 14th.
  • SP Edinson Volquez is expected to be recalled from Triple-A Louisville this week.
  • New OF Charles Blackmon was called up from Triple-A Colorado Springs, where he was hitting .337 with 10 homers, 49 RBI and 12 steals thus far.  OF Dexter Fowler was placed on the DL, and Blackmon is exptected to play in right field, with Carlos Gonzalez moving to center, though he may split time with Ryan Spilborghs.
  • Goodfellas released former 2011 RoadRunner Jorge Cantu.
  • Get Off Kong! selected former 2011 RoadRunner Chris Capuano as a contingency bid, but won the bidding for Rockies arm Rex Brothers.
  • On the Atomic RoadRunners eight-man reserve roster, only two players are not on the disabled list: SP Tim Stauffer and Catching prospect Devin Mesoraco. In addition to Baker and Holliday, OF Nate McLouth, and all three Dodgers relievers (Kuo, Padilla, Jansen) are on the DL as well.

Roster Moves – Week 3 – April 12, 2011

FAAB Acquisitions:

  • SP Esmil Rogers, Rockies ($5 FAAB bid), add to actives

Up:

  • OF Matt Holliday
  • SP Mat Latos
  • SP Chris Narveson
  • RP Kenley Jansen

Move:

  • 2B Jeff Baker (from UT)
  • CM Jose Lopez (from 2B)
  • UT Chris Heisey (from OF)

Down:

  • CM Juan Miranda
  • SP Tim Stauffer
  • RP Rafael Betancourt
  • RP Hong-Chih Kuo

Cut:

  • CM Jorge Cantu

Notes:

  • SP Mat Latos was activated from the 15-Day DL (shoulder bursitis) and pitched well against the Reds Monday night.
  • OF Matt Holliday started Sunday, having been sidelined due to an emergency appendectomy for nine days.

Roster Moves – Week 2 – April 5, 2011

Up:

  • OF Chris Heisey
  • SP Edinson Volquez
  • SP Chris Capuano

Down:

  • OF Matt Holliday
  • RP Kenley Jansen
  • SP Mat Latos

Notes:

  • Holliday will miss at least this week following his emergency appendectomy Friday.  While not on the 15-Day DL, the latest report has him back Monday at the earliest.
  • Originally thought to be eligible to come back from the DL tomorrow, Latos won’t be returning until mid-April, as he’s building stamina in extended spring training.
  • No FAAB bids this week.  The new eight-man reserve roster makes shuttling in role players on the cheap difficult.  Chris Narveson would have been a candidate to be released, but he went and pitched six shutout innings yesterday.

Team Player Holliday Willing to Defer Salary to Keep Pujols

Matt Holliday said Friday on ESPN Radio that he would be willing to defer some of his contract in order to help the Cardinals retain Albert Pujols. Holliday inked a massive seven-year, $120 million deal with the Cardinals last offseason. “I deferred $2 million a year for the whole contract,” the outfielder said Friday morning. “I would be willing, if they came to me and said, ‘Hey, this is what it’s going to take to get Albert done, would you do it again or do more?’ Scott [Boras, Holliday’s agent] probably wouldn’t like me to stay that, but if that’s what it took, I would be willing to do that.” It’s a nice gesture, but also doubtful to happen or in any way shape the course of negotiations between the Cardinals and Pujols’ representatives. • The protected list leaves the Roadrunners with $193 in protected salary, with $67 available for 9 players, for an average of $7.44 per player.

Roster Moves – Week 14 – July 6th, 2010

FAAB Acquisitions:

  • RP Joel Hanrahan, Pirates ($0 FAAB) – Add to Actives

Up:

  • 3B Chase Headley
  • RP Drew Storen
  • SP Randy Wells

Down:

  • 3B Casey Blake
  • RP Sam Demel
  • SP Chris Volstad
  • SP John Ely

Cut:

  • SS Danny Espinosa

Notes:

  • No other bidders on Hanrahan, who joins the Roadrunners for the first time in his career, though he was tracked from Los Angeles to Washington and now to Pittsburgh. He’s a hedge for saves, with the expectation that Pirates closer Octavio Dotel will be dealt in the coming weeks.
  • Update (7/7): The Marlins demoted Chris Volstad to AAA New Orleans after Tuesday night’s rough start.
  • All-Star Teams were announced this weekend, and the Roadrunners have six on the roster.
    • SP Josh Johnson
    • 2B Brandon Phillips
    • SS Troy Tulowitzki (injured, will not participate)
    • UT Omar Infante (really? This selection universally panned)
    • OF Marlon Byrd
    • OF Matt Holliday

Holliday Goes 3-for-3, Breaking out of Slump, Illness

Cardinals OF Matt Holliday went 3 for 3 with a double, a walk and a run scored Sunday against the Mets, ending an 0-for-16 stretch that had lasted five games. He’s batting .311 (14 for 45) overall. The fact Holliday is still batting over .300 shows just how hot he was before his brief drought. His first-half slump from a year ago doesn’t seem to be making a return, so you should treat him as the potential .300-hitting, 30-homer player he is and start him in all leagues. (CBS Sports)
